Our history of lighting ingenuity spans 125 years. Thomas Edison’s lightbulb moment in 1876 saw the invention of the first successful incandescent electric lamp, and GE is still at the forefront of lighting innovation today. We’re now developing the next generation of long-lasting and energy-saving lighting for homes, offices and industry.
In Australia and New Zealand, we are a major provider in the residential, commercial and speciality lighting markets. Although a larger proportion of our business is commercial, you’ll find our lightbulbs in major retailers around the country.
Imagine a bulb that lasts a lifetime
Like many other countries, Australia has phased out the use of inefficient incandescent lightbulbs. Our focus is now on revolutionary light-emitting diode (LED) technology, creating a lightbulb that could last up to 50 years while using less energy to create natural ambient light.
Less energy, less maintenance and far fewer replacement bulbs – the savings are both immediate and long-term. Our new A19 LED range will change the way you perceive energy-efficient lighting, with its streamlined design and significant power savings.
GE has been at the forefront of LED technology since the 1960s, when we first developed it for street lighting and outdoor use. LEDs convert electricity to light, and are vastly different from traditional incandescent light sources. Our latest developments make this technology more accessible for residential and commercial applications.

Lighting the way for Queensland Rail
How can something as simple as changing a lightbulb reduce maintenance and operating costs by up to 90%?
Queensland Rail recently replaced their 400W metal halide fittings in their Esperance freight areas and marshalling yards with GE’s 90W LED F-150 floodlights. The results were illuminating.
The new lights have a life of over 50,000 hours, compared with 14,000 hours previously. Energy consumption has also dramatically reduced, by over 77%. And the quality of light has also improved, creating a safer working environment – essential for workers loading cargo around the clock. Queensland Rail is now considering upgrading the lighting in its other sites.
