The process of applying
Wanting to apply for an internship? Here’s a quick overview of what’s involved:
Step 1: Online application
Your initial application is very important, as it’s often our first introduction to you.
A few tips:
- Understand the role you are applying for.
- Do your research on GE and our internships.
- Ensure that a covering letter addresses the role you are applying to, and why.
- Make sure your resume is up to date, easy to read, and clearly outlines your education and any work experience.
- Be sure to include business related intern, vacation or co-op roles along with any work experience you feel may compliment your application.
- Ensure you meet the minimum eligibility criteria and answer all questions provided.
- Take your time with your answers. A rushed application does you no favours at all.
- Ensure your referees are aware that they may receive a call to discuss your background.
Step 2: Telephone interview
Once you’ve applied, we may call you for a telephone interview. This has been designed so we can understand more about you, your background and where you see your career progressing at GE. The phone interview is an important aspect to your application, so ensure you are prepared well in advance and have a clear view of how you wish to represent yourself.
Step 3: Testing
We then use ability tests to objectively measure your problem-solving and critical reasoning capabilities – and see how they align to our programs. This includes verbal, numeric and inductive testing.
Step 4: Assessment Centre
At this stage, you will be invited to one of our GE Assessment Centres, where we will spend half a day with you, looking to identify the “real you” and see what you are made of! Your time at the assessment centre will include:
- The chance to meet current grads, senior leaders and human resources professionals from the business and recruitment divisions.
- GE overview: provided by human resources and graduates.
- Group exercise: you will receive all the tools required along with the opportunity to prove yourself in a comfortable environment with a few challenging situations.
- Individual exercise: there is nothing you can prepare here, apart from putting your best foot forward.
A few tips:
- Be yourself.
- Dress for the occasion (that’s business attire for those unsure).
- Do your research prior. Make sure you understand our business, our products, our size and scope.
- Be on time, as first impressions are very important.
- Bring questions with you. This is your chance to learn about us, just like it’s our chance to learn about you.
- Enjoy the time with us.
Step 5: Online testing
The next phase in the process is GE’s OPQ, or Occupational Personality Questionnaire. This helps us identify deep insights into your natural style and how it is likely to impact your job performance.
Step 6: Final interview with a senior leader
GE will then conduct behavioural event interviews with candidates using competencies identified that are critical to the role. Candidates are encouraged to adopt the STAR method of answering the questions.
The STAR method is a structured manner of responding to a behavioural-based interview question by discussing the specific situation, task, action, and result of the instance you are describing.
Step 7: Background checks
As a final precautionary measure, we will then check your references and any publicly available background material. This can include looking at police checks, your employment history, and medical check (for engineering positions only).
Step 8: Offer progressed
If you’ve made it this far throughout the interview process, the next step is when you will be made an offer over the phone!
How will you know if you have been successful?
You will be notified by phone and mail.
