To commemorate the Statue of Liberty's one hundredth anniversary, GE Lighting provides the products and funding to relight this national treasure. GE inventor Gilbert Reiling designs a new metal halide lamp specifically for the Liberty project, while Howard Brandston and the GE research lab design the overall lighting scheme for the statue and torch.
1989
In a dramatic change to how and when we can get the latest news, GE's NBC launches CNBC, the Consumer News and Business Channel — a 24-hour, consumer-oriented business news program service that lets us find out what's going on, whenever we want. By the end of its first year, the new cable TV channel has over 13 million subscribers.
1990
An extension of GE Fanuc's HMI/SCADA product CIMPLICITY, this innovative product helps manufacturers track and control the routing of automotive bodies through painting and assembly lines. The product is used by almost all of the major automotive companies as of 2007.
1992
GE sets its sights on the Red Planet, building the Mars Observer for NASA. The spacecraft is successfully launched on a Martin Marietta Titan 3 launch vehicle for a 1993 rendezvous with Mars. The Mars Observer will study Martian geology and climate while mapping the planet's surface in preparation for a landing in the future.

Clinical investigations begin on a new Magnetic Resonance-guided Therapy (MRT) system developed by researchers at GE Medical Systems and the Company's R&D Center. MRT provides direct access to the patient during the imaging process, giving physicians a real-time view of internal organs.
1994
From outer space to cyberspace GE leads the way. GE's Plastics division launches the company's first online web site at www.geplastics.com. In doing so, GE becomes the first Fortune 500 company outside of the computer industry to go online.
1996
Establishing a more comprehensive web presence, GE's corporate web site is launched at www.ge.com. Within 3 years, the web site will be the portal to billions of dollars of sales through e-commerce.
1996
MSNBC, a 24-hour cable news and information channel, and MSNBC on the Internet, a comprehensive interactive on-line news service, are launched by NBC and Microsoft. MSNBC premiers with 22 million subscribers, the largest subscriber base ever for a new cable service. The network also debuts NBC Asia and CNBC Europe, and reintroduces the NBC Super Channel as NBC Europe.
