Alta Devices, Inc.
A development stage company focused on improving the production economics of high efficiency solar PV applications
More Close
Alta Devices is (em)Powering the Unplugged World™ by delivering the world’s most efficient, thin and flexible mobile power technology. Converting light into electricity, Alta's technology extends the energy source of a system, and in many cases, completely cuts the traditional power cord. The solution can be completely integrated into the final system, and is ideal for use in unmanned systems, consumer electronics, automotive, remote exploration, or anywhere size, weight, and mobility matter. Alta Devices holds world records for both cell and module single junction conversion efficiency.
Alta Devices was founded in 2008 by professors Harry Atwater from Cal Tech and Eli Yablonovitch from Berkeley. Shortly after founding the company, they were joined by the company's president and CEO Chris Norris, an experienced executive from the semiconductor industry who has since built a world-class management team from the solar, semiconductor, and capital equipment industries.
Arctic Sand Technologies is a privately held, fabless semiconductor company, spun out of MIT, based in Cambridge, Mass. The company’s power-conversion platform has the potential to transform power management in electronic devices. Arctic Sand’s prominent investment syndicate, differentiating IP and world-class management team lay the ground work for a strong position in multiple markets.
Arctic Sand’s technology platform targets the $10 billion total available market for DC-to-DC power-conversion chips, used today to convert power inside the devices for telecom, datacom, industrial and mobility markets. The Arctic Sand Transformative Integrated Power Solutions (TIPS™) platform offers significant improvements over existing products, reducing energy loss by 50% via solutions a fraction the size of competitive products. By cutting power-conversion losses in half and delivering a smaller solution size within the end products, Arctic Sand’s technology empowers device manufacturers to recover energy and space—satisfying the increased functionality demands of their customers.
Arctic Sand has already earned numerous prestigious industry recognitions, including the 2011 NASA Game Changer Award, the US Department of Energy U-Launch Award, Winner of the Clean Tech Open NE Region, and the NREL Industry Growth Forum Grand Prize Award. The company is also the recipient of the National Science Foundation’s Small Business Innovation Research Phase 1 grant.

CardioDx, Inc., a pioneer in the field of cardiovascular genomic diagnostics, is committed to developing clinically validated tests that empower clinicians to better tailor care to each individual patient. Strategically focused on coronary artery disease, cardiac arrhythmia and heart failure, CardioDx is poised to expand patient access and improve healthcare quality and efficiency through the commercialization of genomic technologies.
CardioDx fuses expertise in genomics, biostatistics, and cardiology to develop objective, reproducible tests that provide clinicians with information to enhance patient care. CardioDx was recently honored as one of FierceMedicalDevices' Fierce 15 most promising private companies. Earlier in the year, CardioDx was named the 2012 Gold Edison Award winner for science and medical. In 2010, the company was honored as a winner of the Wall Street Journal’s prestigious Technology Innovation Awards and Corus® CAD was named one of Time Magazine’s Top Ten Medical Breakthroughs.
The company’s first product, Corus, CAD, is a blood-based gene expression test that enables clinicians to exclude the diagnosis of obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). With a simple blood draw, Corus CAD can safely, accurately and conveniently help primary care clinicians and cardiologists assess whether or not a stable non-diabetic patient’s symptoms are due to obstructive CAD, enabling many patients to avoid unnecessary noninvasive and invasive cardiac procedures and exposure to imaging-related radiation risks or imaging agent intolerance.
Corus CAD is the only sex- specific test for obstructive CAD, accounting for critical biological differences between men and women. Corus CAD has been used commercially by clinicians in more than 35,000 patients and is a covered benefit for more than 40 million Medicare enrollees in the U.S.
CardioDx recently announced the publication of the COMPASS (Coronary Obstruction Detection by Molecular Personalized Gene Expression) study in Circulation: Cardiovascular Genetics, a journal of the American Heart Association. Results of this prospective, multi-center U.S. study showed that Corus CAD outperformed traditional stress testing with myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI), demonstrating high accuracy with both a higher sensitivity (89 percent vs. 27 percent, p<0.001) and higher negative predictive value (96 percent vs. 88 percent, p<0.001) than MPI for assessing obstructive CAD. The study’s authors conclude that using Corus CAD earlier in the diagnostic algorithm could reduce the number of invasive cardiac tests by more accurately evaluating the presence of obstructive coronary artery disease compared to the traditional algorithm of stress MPI in these patients.
The Corus CAD test is intended for use in nondiabetic stable patients who present with typical or atypical symptoms suggestive of CAD, with no known history of CAD, no prior myocardial infarction (MI) or revascularization procedure, and who are not currently taking steroids, immunosuppressive agents or chemotherapeutic agents. CardioDx performs the Corus CAD test in its onsite clinical laboratory which has been certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) according to the Clinical Laboratory Improvements Amendments (CLIA), as required by law. The CardioDx laboratory has achieved licensing to perform tests for all 50 states including those with their own requirements.
CardioDx is a privately held company funded by Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers, TPG Biotech, Mohr Davidow Ventures, Intel Capital, Pappas Ventures, DAG Ventures, Asset Management Company, GE Capital, Longitude Capital, JP Morgan Venture Capital, Acadia Woods Partners, Artiman Ventures, Bright Capital, and Temasek.
